Exploring Telephones skills.
I was amazed when I walked at the outdoor and I noticed” L and “P” were talking, dialling the phone and playing with the keyboard of the computer. They were holding the receiver part of the telephone and talked to one another. I noticed their interests in their dialogue and their curiosity to pretend that their conversation is real. This shows their imaginations in their minds. I asked them what they are talking about, they smiled and said ,”we are talking to the police”. Wow, what was it for? Someone come into our house and steal our TV. My understanding of technology is everything to do with the electronic appliances such as computers, laptops, ipad, cell phones and all other electronic devices. However, I know that technology is involving in these child’s learning through holding the telephone, dialling the numbers, identifying the keys and listening to the sounds.
One of the significance use of technology which influence children’s learning in this observation, is the relationship of being creative to technology. This means that, what pictures they have in their minds showed in their conversation. This was amazed by the way they dialled the police number and tried to listen to the sound of people speaking in the phone. This is also confirmed by Smorti, S. (1999) she states that” technology is also a creative and purposeful activity aimed needs and opportunities through the development of products systems or environment” (p.5). This reflect by the connection of technology with Te Whāriki. This early childhood curriclum document have relevant statements and refrences which support technology, in terms of communication, technology work and leisure where children continue to aquire new knowledge and skills (Minintstryof Education,Te Whāriki,1996).
In communication,”children expericne skills with media that can be used for expressing a mood or a feeling for representing information, such as instruments and movements skills” (Ministry of Education,1996, p.80). Therefore educators in early childhood setting should provide opportunities to children to explore technology. There is a relevant interconnectness of technology to social cultural context of learning which occur in this event. This shows by the way they dialogue, and the use of their intellectual resouce which are the telephone to develop and expand their understanding of possibilities that they can do in urgent times . It is very vital to foster children’s learning about and through technology so that they can develop the confidence in creating new knowledge and new skills to cope with the new changes around the world. This is also link to Te Whāriki where children “experience with some of the technology and resources for mathematics, reading and writing (p. 78). It does reflect familiarity with the properties and character of the materials and technology used in the creative and expressive arts (p. 80) and the ability to represent their discoveries, using creative and expressive media and the technology associated with them (p. 88).
Most of these technological purposes were focus on “problem solving and social science areas that are a part of the process of technology” (Smorti, 1999, p. 8). I was impressed by the way that Smorti, 1999) link technology to Te Whāriki, because it seems that technology incorporates with social science produce an educational foundation that supports the full range of skills that children will need as life-long learners” (MOE, 1996, p.18).
In relation to social science, exploration of people’s interaction is occur, with their social and physical environment. This was originated through history, law, philosophy and others for the main focus is to foster the child’s awareness of self in the social setting. However, the society has passionately embraced technology, some early childhood educators has resisted the use of computers in the classroom. This is closing the door to the children to extend and expand their learning and might lead to believe in a lot of fairy tale stories and myths. I think this is inappropriate which limit the progression of children’s learning if educators still hold on to to their thoughts.References:

Kiaora Malu! wow you have been busy all your blogs up and posted. Good job! I really like your observation of the children on the phone. I find a lot of what children pick up and learn from people around them is shown in the way in which they talk and what they talk about when they are using the phone in the centre's. It shows us as educators the kind of role models they have in their life and also allows for a lot of self expression from the children, to find their voice :)
ReplyDeleteYou made some really good points about the learning they are getting from this technology, and also made lots of great links to literature about technology. I feel though that it would of been interesting to hear more of your own personal beliefs in how you think children learn from this technology, such as the maths aspect of it, learning their numbers, learning to recall phone numbers etc.
I also was intriqued by your comments you made about the belief you feel that children may believe more fairy tales and myths if they are not exposed to technology in the centre. It would of been great to hear more of your own personal feeling on this issue :)
Tumeke Malu, you have posted all your blogs up…good on you…great work..
ReplyDeleteBut yeah the using of the telephone influences the creativity of the children which is a very important aspect of the children's developmental, and I also think that they also use their imaginative skills when pretending with their conversations.
I agree with the inter- connection of the technology and the social context where the children lived in. This has a huge impact on the way the children learn from others and develop through modelling skills. It is really effective for us adults to provide a variety of opportunities for children such as exploring telephones to explore and develop their skills. Ka pai Ru..
I think it is an important message that you are sending out to educators to open doors to the children to use technology instead of using their old fairy tales to develop the children learning. I think by encouraging this, we need to provide more resources like telephones in our centres so that children can be more flexible to explore and experience new technological learning.
Ka pai Ru..awesome work
It's great to see that you have completed all three blogs. Your observations of these children using a digital technology was great and the learnings that came out of them were very clear. I would like to add on more to your blog such as the other skills that you noticed. This includes their mathematical skills where they are able to identify numbers on a phone. also mentioning that children are aware of who to call when they have a problem. For instance, it was great to notice that when the children pretended their T.v was stolen, they called the police. This links to Te Whariki where childrne are familiar with their community.
ReplyDeleteI have noticed that in my centre we have telephones from different generations, it would be great if you also introduced children to the different kinds of telephones and that could also be adding more into technology for instance, children see the changes to the telephones and maybe you can all make your own kinds of telephnes with different shapes and sizes and different colours as well as texture. It does not have to be fancy and can be made with anything available in the centre. You have done such a great job with your blog Malu, and also linking it to literature. Well done.
Kia Ora Ru
ReplyDeleteOh yes Ru, telephone is one of the technology that children have to learn so that they can communicate with the needs that they need in their lives. As you said some relevant points of using the telephone in the early childhood setting, it is reminds me of the new technology nowadays easily define the true meaning of the learning skills that children have. Telephone is also help the children to have pretend play to extend and express their feelings and knowledge through conversations between peers.
It also acknowledge the important of this technology tools to children when they need help at home or where there is a problem in their lives. Using telephone in the centre will also help the children to learn numbers and improve communications skills by making up stories in their conversations. Infants and toddlers also influence from watching the young children or the teachers using telephone while they interact with the children.
Tino Pai Malu, Kia Kaha!
Yes my friend, I believe of what you said that technology is also a creative and purposeful activity. In a life of a child, whatever is at hand becomes a tool for the time being, and a young child as well has no way of expecting boredom or frustrating, so as using of telephone. Children choose what they learn, take their own time about it, and enjoy it all. They become completely involved in their pretend play to satisfy the developmental needs of each period of growth. Somerset (2000) states that children investigate people, places, things, actions and events until the world become more familiar, and life fits into a rhythmic pattern or routine in a safe and tested sequence. Of course the experimenting and exploring is never-ending, but develops at new levels of language, understanding and fantasy a gust throughout life.
